Back in the old days I used to live in Perth. Not the nice, sunny Perth in Australia but the Perth in Scotland. The one with a sky that looks like a Tupperware box. I can’t criticise it too much, I have loads of great memories. The Holly Valance Hall Of Appreciation for example, running into a wall wrapped in bubble wrap, the laughs of removing arm hair with gaffa tape in the college studios.
Anyway, this is all by the by. My girlfriend’s little sister was – and still is to the best of my knowledge – crazy about horses. So we used to find ourselves at the stables helping with the horses. It was the first of January in either 2004 or 2005 that cleaning the stables and feeding the horses was the very first thing I did. I wasn’t allowed breakfast until it was done.
Fast-forward four (or three) years later and I find myself doing something pretty similar in Switzerland. Catriona gets horse-riding lessons on a Thursday which means I get to take her to the stables and hang around while she gets popped on her favourite horse which is called Confetti. She loves that horse and bizarrely, I do too. I’m not a huge horse fan but this one is lovely. It could be that she knows that I have horse treats my bag of course.
Oh, and the girls that keep horses there are H.O.T.
Today has been a great day. It was a really amazing day so we had a lovely barbecue on the balcony at the back of Lorna’s house. Being a man I had to take charge of cooking meat on fire, and I think I did a damn good job. Go me. In fact I’m writing this on the balcony watching the sunset through the trees with my laptop on my knee and a bottle of beer next to me. There is a downside. I have just gone through the emotional rollercoaster that is the Doctor Who series finale and I can’t have a cigarette. Boo.
Tomorrow Lorna and Catriona are going for a horse ride together and that means I shall get a lovely morning to myself. If it’s a nice day I shall go for a mad rally around the woods on my bike.
In other news I am a really happy camper for two reasons. 1) My Nintendo DS was ordered today and 2) I HAVE COMPANY FOR MY TRIP TO AMSTERDAM!
I was nervous that I would have to visit a city that I have never been in a country I’ve never been to by myself. A city where cannabis is legal and there is a red light district. Not to mention canals that I may fall into and plenty of bikes and trams that can silently try and kill me.
My company will arrive in the Netherlands a full five hours before me and they will look amazingly like my parents, but that’s good. It means I can get post and stuff like that. And I get to see them and spend a fun weekend cruising canals and touring the Cannabis Museum.
Well, maybe not the Cannabis Museum.
Oh, and if you're bored have a look at my amazing new profile picture. I like to think it's rather subtle.

"A city where cannabis is legal and there is a red light district."
Most cities have some kind of red light district, it's just that some are a lot more obvious than others. And I know that any city with a college is going to have cannabis available, not that you'd need that of course.
Remember in Amsterdam you can't smoke tobacco indoors. Just like at home.
