I have a tendency to get into bands after they have split up. Kinesis, for example. Ben Folds Five would be another. And Skunk Anansie makes three.
Skunk Anansie are a very difficult band to pigeonhole musically. They can be laid back, they can rock out, they can groove and they can be angry beyond belief. The lead singer - nicknamed Skin - is a black lady who was clearly racially bullied in her life and has found an outlet for it in the form of music. Because of this a lot of the songs are very politically and racially driven. Just look at the song Intellectualise My Blackness.
Skin has - simply put - the most magical and captivating singing voice that I've ever heard. She can be whispering to you for one line and the next line she's bawling at you; it really draws you in. Here are two videos, both of songs taken from their second album Stoosh which will hopefully illustrate what I'm talking about. Enjoy.
