Many years ago I used to work nightshift hours and round about this time of year I hated it. Not because of Christmas, Christmas was really great; we got a big ol’ free meal at midnight one night as a sort of festive thank you and there were lots of people in, so your spiraling workload was eased. No, I hated it because of the short hours of daytime.
You see, on the day where the hours of sunlight were at their lowest (the ‘shortest day’ although the day is still twenty-four hours) I would go to work, stay there until I was allowed to leave, go home, go to bed and get up all without seeing any sunlight. I would then have to do it all again. After two or three days of doing this you get fairly depressed. Electric light just doesn’t have the same fun about it. Of course it was worth it, I was working with a great group of people and was handsomely paid for it (considering I spent ten until seven basically stocking shelves).
That said, I did hate the seasonal aisle. As you can imagine the season aisle changed depending on the season; January Savers, Valentines Day, Easter, Summer (gardening stuff, it smelled really bad), Halloween and - of course - Christmas. Most of the Christmas stuff was covered in glitter, so I would come out of there after tidying it all up looking like I was the victim of a really pathetic glitter explosion. Most of it end up on my T-Shirt, hands and face and the damn stuff doesn’t come off! And people that take Christmas lights out of boxes and just leave them sitting on the shelf deserve nothing less than both hands being chopped off.
With that merry thought I will go now. Off up the road to see lots of people.
Tatty-bye!
