A few weeks ago I was in a computer games shop with a few friends. This shop - as well as selling new products - buys and sells old consoles and games. And they had one of the first generation Nintendo Game Boys for sale. My family had two of these machines, my Mum and I got one then my Dad and brother (seething with jealousy, no doubt) bought one as well. After seeing this very old school gaming device it set me thinking.
You see, these machines were eight-bit. Meaning the sound was awful. And since the early Game Boys only had one speaker it sounded really awful, but not without a certain charm. I started kicking an idea around my head; what would a modern day piece of music sound like represented in eight-bit form? I had to find out.
What you are about to listen to (or rather, what you have the option of listening to) is not in eight-bit. It is simple played and mixed in a tribute to the original Game Boys. Meaning it sounds like crap. All my mixes sound like crap, but this one's meant to. Of course, some liberties have been taken. I've got vocals on my tune, it would have been boring without. There's some little mixing trickery used as well you wouldn't have found back in the day. However the tune itself is fairly repetitive which is true to the period.
I've rambled enough. I haven't told you what song I've based this on yet, but you'll be able to work it out from the title alone. So, here's Super Mario Black Hole.
Edit: A little player thing should load if you give it a minute. It's taking ages here...
